The Price, Arthur Miller’s rarely staged 1960s piece is playing at Dublin’s The Gate Theatre throughout July and August this summer. The four-character play takes place in the attic room of a soon to be demolished house in New York and sets up a compelling exploration of family dynamics.
Following the death of their parents two estranged brothers, Victor Franz (played by Denis Conway) and Walter Franz (Barry McGovern) meet to organise the disposal of their parents’ depression-era furniture. Victor, a policeman, gave up on his scientific ambitions to look after his ruined father while Walter has become a successful surgeon having abandoned the family to pursue his medical career.
Over the course of their tense reunion festering resentment and bitterness emerges as Miller explores the brothers’ disparate paths and the emotional fall-out of their long delayed meeting.
